Visiting Philippines? Try this dessert

My #1 Philippine dessert is not traditionally filipino. The day I arrived was grey and wet, yet humid. The traffic was a cluttered mess going from the airport. But the start of an authentic Asian experience. It was in September. I am however not reminiscing about my stay, but the smell of caramalized sugar when I entered the kitchen that following morning. The Philippines have its traditional dessert like Halo-Halo and Buku salad that is both delectable, must try frozen desserts. But it is neither of the two that made an impression on me during my visit to the Philippines. I originally began writing this post to share a great delicacy of my first visit to the Philippines.  Being passed off as a filipino dessert, I soon realised that this is not a filipino dessert but, the filipino version rather. It is still the filipino version I prefer, since I had travelled to Mexico, France and South Africa. My finding is that the filipino version referred to as Leche Flan is tastier,...

Things to do if you only had one day in Cozumel

Cozumel is considered to be one of Mexico's largest, most popular islands. It lies peaceful off the coast near the Mayan Riviera, to me it has become a destination deeper than just sunbathing and martini’s, but a destination where I managed to enter a stage of acceptance and peace. I have been to Cozumel before, more than once and I am very sure that it was not the last time I would visit this extraordinary gem with cobalt blue skies and emerald green vegetation.

You slide your feet into the fine white sand that dances with the tides of crystal water, while the sun caress your shoulders. A place memories are made of, but I have come here to forget. To let go.

That morning our group gathered beneath the restless palm trees, with flip flops, shades and backpacks and wondered into town planning our day. Everyone was excited but me. I have experienced what was considered to be of a great loss at the time, and even though I was excited for the adventure, what was inside of me was dead. It would take a sun god to intervene and free me from such inner war. A result of the August 2017 eclipse. Luckily for me, by the time we left for Cozumel, I have worked through most of the pain, and all I needed was that push, a little push into the turquoise glistening ocean, a push to leave sight of the shore a swim. Cozumel opened that ocean for me once more. To me Cozumel is not just a perfect destination, but a rebirth. Cozumel with its white sands and joyous atmosphere revealed to me the happiness I was missing out on because I was holding onto the shore, to sad to let go.

But, this awakening was motivated by a special group of friends in this very remarkable place and we got to experience most of it by Jeep. Cozumel is that destination that aspires you to let your hair down. To breath. To fall in the sand and allow it to scratch into folds you never knew you had.

Cozumel as a true beauty you can boast about. That island visit your friends would be jealous of. Cozumel is not just an "Instagrammable" destination, but a destination of relaxation and freedom. Cozumel boasts with many of the most extraordinary resorts high above our pay grade, but also offers many great things that would barely cost you anything.

First on my list, and by Ferrie

1)     Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is on the other side, that you need to reach by Ferrie. The island is filled with shops and easy accessible beaches, which leaves me with a feel of St. Maarten. After the shopping you can relax on the beach with an ice cold daiquiri while soaking up the sun

The Dolphin Experience

I didn’t get to do the dolphin experience in Cozumel, but was fortunate enough to have done it years earlier in St Kitts.

3)

Palancar Reer

Are you a diver? Then this is surely the place to go, it is a divers paradise.

The National Marine Park

Cozumel's Lighthouse, Celarain

There is so much more to do than my short list, if you treasure history, then you can visit the Cozumel museum. I wasn’t going to spend my time on a hot sunny day, in a museum, I preferred the beach, white sand and an ice cold beer that trickled into the sand.

Note: Cozumel is also a very popular cruise destination, which gives you the opportunity to see more destination with less time. If you want to explore all of Cozumel then this is not the option to go for, but if one day at a great beach is enough for you, then a cruise vacation to Cozumel is not such a bad idea.
